Where do I even begin? Like many—I found myself an unemployed tech worker last summer. After working for one of the worst companies and leadership groups ever, I was truly a shell of my former self. As a Black woman in America, I’ve dealt with the “typical” work environment nonsense…racism, sexism, & discrimination. But it wasn’t until I began working for technology behemoths that I found myself in the most toxic workplaces of my career thus far. Gaslighting, psychological warfare, lack of humanity, lack of intelligence, and lack of corporate accountability are HUGE PROBLEMS in the tech industry. Never before had a job made me feel so low, so worthless, and so very inept.

To make matters worse, I spent the last seven months looking for another opportunity. And honestly, I’m still looking for something that really speaks to me. But I know I wouldn’t have survived a wrongful termination and agonizingly long, complicated job search full of rejections, fake job posts, and ghostings not to mention the PTSD that came with all that—if it weren’t for Angel Lent! I cannot stress enough the value of career coaching especially these days. Ten years ago…heck even three years ago before the pandemic…I’d had no need for a resume writer, a fleshed out LinkedIn profile, strong social media presence or career coach. But things have changed! The job market seems more cutthroat now…regardless of industry. It’s harder than ever to truly stand apart from other candidates—harder than ever to demand respect, acknowledgement and fair pay. And yet, that’s exactly what we must do.

It’s been a long journey these many months and I wanted to give up multiple times. Angel didn’t let me though. Instead she encouraged me, educated me, assured me and most of all—acknowledged that I’m no impostor. I’m great at what I do whether that be caregiving, business development, retention, DEI, or customer success. Getting let go from a horrendous company wasn’t my fault/loss—it was theirs. And it was clearly meant to be because now with Angel’s help, I’m approaching my career in a more deliberate way than ever before. I’m more confident, self-assured, prepared and determined to succeed.
